Let’s Start with

1st Mistake is - Not correcting Grammatical errors

a) You should read you resume 2-3 times before Interview and you will catch most of these grammatical errors
b) Write resume with Microsoft Word because while you are writing resume
c) You can install extension called “Grammarly” in Chrome browser or you can go to grammarly.com site and paste your resume.

2nd Mistake is - Making resume too long -

Only mention information which you are comfortable talking about with good amount of details

a) This point is specially for experience people - You might have completed 15 projects
but You should only showcase 3-5 best projects in your resume out of 15

b) Don’t leave so much blank space in resume, Your resume format should utilise space smartly

3rd Mistake - Mentioning Outdated information in projects / trainings sections

4th Mistake - Not Following order of events

When you are writing about Education, Experience or Training
It is very important to follow certain order - Either start with most recent and move to oldest
or start with oldest and move to most recent

5th Mistake - Writing long paragraphs and Over-explaining -

Follow these steps -
a) Don’t over explain while writing about Project Work, Trainings, Achievement, Strengths sections in your resume

b) Don’t write long paragraphs rather use bullet points

These bullet points should be to the point and precise. This will make good impression

6th Mistake - Making Resume too colourful like rainbow

Using 5-6 colours in your resume for for heading, name, sections etc does not look professional. Use single colour only . You can use colour for headings in resume. And this colour should be consistent throughout your resume

Pro Tip - You can use 1-2 shades of black to give more emphasis to certain points / headings

7th Mistake - Using too many font types and size ( formatting mistakes )

Do not use more than 3 font sizes in entire resume
One font size of heading, one for sub heading and one for all paragraphs
these font sizes should be consistent throughout your resume

8th Mistake - Mentioning Irrelevant information

Here are few mistakes you can avoid

a) If you are not comfortable with Career Objective - remove it, this is not mandatory section
Career Objective is good to have if you are fresher
but for experience people your work experience is more important

b) In Personal Information section - Don’t write Father’s name and Mother’s name & occupation etc
Resume is not bio data and family information is irrelevant

c) Don’t write Declaration at the end of Your resume saying “I here by certify that above information mentioned in resume is true etc” -
Not really required

9th Mistake - Not Personalising Resume

By Personalising - I mean changing resume as per company requirement.
For experience candidates - Using same resume for all companies may not be a good Idea.
You should write your skills, experience, project and trainings which are more close to company's requirements.

10th Mistake - Using same language in all bullet points

Starting all your bullet points with same words is not good. For example In Trainings section someone has mentioned-
“Successfully completed trainings A from City Lucknow….”
“Successfully completed trainings B from City Delhi…."

See this becomes monotonous and looks bad. Rather use different opening lines.

Sample Opening Lines are below -

- Successfully completed training
- Received certificate of completion
- Added Skill with training
- On Successful completion
- Performed well in training
- Added training to my skillset
